REVIEW: leguano scio – versatile slip-on barefoot shoes for active families

Looking for practical barefoot shoes the whole family will love? We tested leguano scio and were delighted by their simplicity, versatility and incredible comfort.

The LEGUANO SCIO model is one of the most-loved barefoot shoes in our household. Last summer, our children spent most of their time in these shoes. And honestly, I can’t blame them – this year I gave in too and bought my own pair. These sporty-yet-smart slip-ons offer a surprisingly wide range of uses, which makes them a brilliant choice for the whole family.

Main pros:

• easy to slip on – children can put them on by themselves
• they’re lightweight and extremely breathable
• compact – they fit into a handbag or rucksack
• machine washable for easy care
• versatile style for different occasions – city or countryside
• elegant minimalist design that goes with any outfit

Main cons:

• they need washing more often, but they dry quickly (wash them in the evening, they’re dry by morning)
• the material isn’t suitable for wet conditions
• children refuse to wear any other shoes 🙂

I wouldn’t recommend these shoes for people with a valgus or varus heel position, because they don’t have a heel counter or any reinforcement around the heel. 

Key features and technical assessment

LEGUANO SCIO are breathable slip-on shoes that both children and parents will appreciate. I’m really pleased that the kids can put them on and take them off independently, without any help. What’s more, thanks to the comfortable material, you can wear them with socks or barefoot. 

The Lifolit® sole is perfectly elastic, flexible in every direction and beautifully soft underfoot. The knitted upper adapts brilliantly to different foot shapes and provides excellent breathability even in hot weather.

On the children’s models you’ll find a cute iguana patch, while the adult versions are finished with an elegant silver detail featuring the brand logo. I really appreciate the minimalist design, which works just as well with dresses as it does with jeans or shorts.

Because they pack down so small, they’re ideal travel companions – they take up hardly any space in your luggage, yet they’re useful for a wide range of activities. The great news is that they’re machine washable, so looking after them is pretty straightforward. Get them dirty – wash them – let them dry. 

Even though they’re not made for wet weather, that didn’t bother us on hot summer days. The kids even ran around after rain in wet grass, then simply left the shoes in the sun to dry off a bit and carried on.

After every trip away we washed the shoes in the washing machine, and then as needed during everyday wear (roughly every 1–2 weeks).

Real-world testing

The urban jungle

In the city, LEGUANO SCIO performed well on all types of surfaces. On hot pavements during summer heat, you’ll appreciate their breathability. Gravel paths and uneven ground aren’t an issue thanks to the flexible sole, which adapts to every bump and dip.

They were especially handy for quick dashes out of the house – no laces to tie, you just slip them on and go. For parents of small children, that’s a huge saving of time (and stress).

Holiday in Italy

On our Mediterranean holiday, LEGUANO SCIO became our most valuable companions. On walks through the historic centres of Italian towns – where cobbled lanes alternate with smooth marble surfaces – they offered both stability and comfort.

At the beach, we also loved how quickly you can slip them on when moving between sandy and stony sections. Hot sand or stones aren’t a problem. The biggest advantage was being able to wear them barefoot – in a hot climate, that’s a blessing. No damp socks, no faffing about. You just slip into your shoes and head off to explore.

A mountain adventure in the Jeseníky Mountains

Warm summer days took us up into the hills, where we explored the attractions around Dolní Morava. They’re not designed for mountain hiking trails, but for shorter walks on marked paths, they did the job well.

Comfort at the cottage

Even though I was hesitant to take them to the cottage, the kids insisted – and they were right. Running around the garden, walks across meadows and wandering along forest paths – once again, the shoes didn’t let us down. And indoors, they worked perfectly as comfortable slippers.

School and after-school activities

But our children didn’t only wear them outside in summer. Our daughter also used them as indoor shoes at school – lightweight, breathable and easy to care for. At her majorette club, she appreciated their flexibility during movement-based activities.

Our son took them to his grandma’s instead of bulky slippers, and we also brought them to exercise classes where he couldn’t be barefoot. Their versatility keeps surprising us.
